- (Adobe offers the free Adobe Reader for Mac, but I still recommend Preview over Reader because Preview is built into the Mac OS. The only time I would recommend Reader is when you might need to complete a form that someone created in Adobe Acrobat.
- More and more operating systems, smartphones, and other devices contain built-in abilities to show PDF files. Even so, a dedicated PDF reader often has a number of advantages over the built-in PDF reader you may already have, like viewing options, better search, and a lot more.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro — Adobe actually created the PDF file format back in 1991, so you might think that Adobe Acrobat Pro would be the hands-down favorite for the best PDF editor for Mac. While it’s true that Adobe Acrobat Pro is an extremely powerful PDF editor, it’s also incredibly expensive.
Adobe Reader for Mac is a capable PDF viewer that allows you to view, print, and annotate PDF files for free. If you register with Adobe, you can connect Adobe Reader for Mac to Adobe Document Cloud, which is a suite of cloud-based software applications from Adobe Systems that provides PDF-related services, including conversion and document. Fortunately, Mac users have two free popular options for a PDF viewer: Adobe's Reader and Apple's Preview. Adobe created the PDF document standard in 1993. Since then, they have provided a reader for many platforms including the Mac.
Installing Adobe Reader is a two-step process. First you download the installation package, and then you install Adobe Reader from that package file.
Before you install, make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements.
- Note:If you're running Mac OS X 10.9 or later, install the latest version of Reader. For step-by-step instructions, see Install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on Mac OS.
- Select your operating system, a language, and the version of Reader that you want to install. Then click Download now.
- When asked whether to open or save the .dmg file, select Save File, and then click OK.Important: If you do not see this dialog box, another window could be blocking it. Try moving any other windows out of the way.
- Double-click the .dmg file. If you don't see the Downloads window, choose Tools > Downloads.
- If the download package doesn't appear in the Downloads window and a Thank You screen remains visible, click the download link on the Thank You screen.
- Double-click the Adobe Reader [version] Installer.pkg to start the installation.
- If a dialog box appears telling you to quit Reader, close Reader, and then click OK.
- When the Install Adobe Reader dialog box appears, click Continue. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Reader.

- Select your operating system, a language, and the version of Reader that you want to install. Then click Download now.

- When the Install Succeeded window appears, click Close.
